Racing the Bon Jon Pass Out
I do lots of small events, but big events are fewer and further between on my calendar. I headed out to to Seattle and then the tiny town of Quilcene for the Bon Jon Pass Out gravel race courtesy of my friends at Rene Herse Cycles with the invitation.
With some inclement weather in store, we didn't know what to expect, climbing from sea level to just shy of 4,000 feet elevation, especially given the forecast for lightning, hail, and worse!
But the brave souls toed the startline and we had a great time all the same.

Packing for Unbound: The Never-Ending Struggle
Просмотров 34 тыс.Месяц назад
This day and age, there are lots of 200 mile races. But Unbound stands alone in the amount of hardware, stuff, parts, bits-and-pieces that are required to put together a fun, fast day. I put together this video to help show what I pack to prepare for our Gravel Locos-to-Unbound road trip and have my bike and Laura's bike ready for the action!
Riding Across Portugal to The Traka
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 месяца назад
The European Unbound?! That's the unofficial title of The Traka, certainly the most well known gravel race in the European continent. With 560, 360, 200, 100, and 50km distances as well as an action packed week full of programming, there's a lot going on. There's an extra lot going on when I (Ted, here) fly from home in Vermont to Levi's Gran Fondo then Sea Otter in California, straight to Port...

Is it a road race? A gravel race? Mixed terrain, maybe? Who knows but this event is going to be an absolute throw down of North American talent! Covering 138 miles and more than 13,000 feet of climbing, this event snakes its way all across Sonoma County. Follow along on my preview of the course as well as a bike check coming into this massive Saturday on a bike. See the course here: www.strava....
The Birkie to Mallorca to Valley of Tears Gravel -- Modern Day Professional Gravel Racing

Let the good times roll. The first event of my 2024 season was the nordic ski race, the American Birkebeiner in Hayward, Wisconsin with @untappedmaple. From there, I flew home for one day and then was off to Mallorca for a dream cycling vacation (with a bit of work to fill in the gaps, i.e. lots of intervals) with Laura and a few friends. Next up, I flew directly to Texas and the inaugural Vall...
How to Ride Bikes All Winter Long
Просмотров 34 тыс.5 месяцев назад
It takes thick skin to ride a bike all winter long in New England. But it also takes the right clothes, quite a bit of knowhow when it comes to keeping your kit and bike clean, it takes the right set of fenders, and a vacuum water bottle... among other things. Tune in to see how Ted grits through three, four, five, six hour days on the bike riding through a harsh winter in his 2024 pursuit of g...
Ted's XL'ent Adventure: VTXL | Bikepacking Vermont
Просмотров 26 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In the aftermath of the summer 2023 flooding in Vermont, towns were devastated, houses and businesses were underwater, roads were washed away, with tens of millions of dollars forecasted to bring VT life back to normal. It was the only reasonable thing to do to cancel Ted's XL'ent Adventure's ride across the state which was slated for one week after this historic flooding. All through the summe...

very good
Aerobars, helmets, jerseys, sleeping in motels, tight shorts, clip on shoes, backpacks, Birkenstocks ... Only Lance was missing here. 🙂
Does anyone know what bike travel cases those are?
It was fun to ride with y'all at the Bon Jon Race!
Quick RH question.....do you know if the Hatcher Pass has the same performance/tread pattern as the Snoqualmie Pass. I am interested in trying some RH tires and know you do (amazingly) well on the latter, but I'm heavier / taller and thinking of trying the Hatcher Pass....currently on 42 and 45 Pathfinders. Thanks !
Favorite Cyclist!! More Small Events for the average everyday Masses......Why?? Training isn't as consuming and you get more time with your supportive family. Ride on Ted!!
Your background music is way too loud. Never been a fan of background music on RUclips videos.
Interesting data video, but you kept saying “riders”, you should have said “percentage or riders”
Rene Hearse tires are awesome. I use the Hurricane Ridge in 700*42. They held up great during Unbound
Good to see you out there last Saturday. I definitely suffered from the cold. Still a beautiful day out.
Lachlan is a pleasure to listen to. What a G! If you want to see the future of Gravel Racing. World Cup MTB could be a good reference as to where it might end up. Started NORBA racing in 1988…now look at where it is today.
You were not riding through pine trees. There are very few there. They are mostly fir, cedar and spruce. Thanks for coming out.
Nice1, looks like a wonderful spot minus the weather. Stay safe and upright!
Congrats at the win. I went with the same tire choice and it’s my goto option for chunkier stuff in the PNW. I was in the 2nd start group and saw tons of riders cut the race short or need aid because of the rain/cold!
Would like to hear some thoughts on the KAV helmet. I'm looking for a replacement and its on my short list.
What’s the name of the tires again? 😂 you gave me the want to give it a try!
Keep your maple syrup packets off our ground.
46/50 must feel good on the climbs. Like climbs feel good 😅.
You Sir, Live the Good Life!!! Chapeau!!
I run the Rene Herse file tread on gravel. It provides great traction and predictable cornering. I have the knobbiest, but I haven’t had a chance to use them yet.
You were in the Olympics not the cascades
I thought it was the Rockies??
No Pine trees! 🤪
Great video! Met you at Friday check in. I rode the short course. The weather was terrible and so cold! But thank goodness we didn’t get the thunderstorms… Glad you enjoyed the ride!
Great setup, I built up an Cannondale EVO SE with force 2x and running the Manostash on Reserves 40/44 wheels, used it for a gravel race last month in a crazy mixed terrain of mud, muck, sand, chunk, fine gravel, and tarmac, and it handled fantastic. Ran the endurance casing. No wheeping and havent noticed a puncture since I installed them two months ago with orange seal.
Heck yes! That’s a great bike/build!
Hi Ted, what bike case was that at 0:17 ?
Was that a bike box Alan? Im curious too, BikeFLights is getting too pricey, thinking of investing in a box.
Hey, that’s a ShokBox. It’s great! Highly recommended.
ShokBox. 10/10
I live on vashon I discovered gravel racing online recently. I used to race road in the 90s. I'm hoping to save for my first gravel bike .it's great to see a race in washington
All I know about Vashon is when I was an aspiring ski bum, I’d send my handwritten letters to K2 for free stickers! 😂
Thanks for the video. How do you like that helmet? Heard mixed reviews on the weight factor. Thanks!
I love it! Honestly love it. The new model with the custom color options shed something like 25 or 30% of the previous model’s weight. I think you’ll dig it.
Thanks. What I needed to hear.
CONGRATS!!
First!
What brand of bike boxes are you packing your bikes in?
ShokBox!
Ted asked Lachlan who he'd like to ride with. There it is folks Lachlan's new RUclips series "Lachlan Rides With?"!
Why can't they simply provide a few faucets at hydration stations, and everybody just refills their original water bottles and Camel Backs?
Watching Lachlan win was amazing. I'd feel the same watching you win Ted! Go get it! But also have deep respect for the process of trying!
Appreciated!
You guys are both inspiring. Thanks! .
what a legend
Such a great watch two awesome guys chewing the fat. And big ups to Lachie for the win from Radelaide Australia 🇦🇺👊🏼
Lachy is goated. Great episode!
Watching two of my favorite cyclists of all time talking about their lives and perspectives and journeys and personal growth. Wow that’s amazing. One of the best interviews I’ve seen in a long time.
Gravel Kings podcast, Found it
Lachlan's role at EF: he's basically their marketing department.
Actually though. Incredible ambassador
If amatures can race it will be fine - if you start having pro only races with no chance of general participation it will just be dirty road racing.
Ted, seeing this video is 2 years old and new CEO promised an additional Gravel event linked to the USAC - DID IT HAPPEN OR A PROMISE ONLY. Cheers mate
Interesting fact. Port Macquarie is named after ...Lachlan Macquarie.
RAAM? Seems right up his alley!
Unbound 350?
Awesome interview! Thanks!
Bella lach💜anche Ted💜
Wonderful interview. Thank you both for letting us listen in ✌️
Fantastic conversation, fellas. I've never raced a day in my life and loved every minute of this discussion. Thanks Ted and Lachlan.
My rental bike didn't have enough low gears. The legs gave out at the 25 mile marker after battling a constant headwind. I'll bring my S & S equipped Moots next time. With a 24 - 42 low gear, it should be no trouble ticking off this major bucket list item and adding it to the Stelvio, Mt. Evans and Pikes Peak. Allez!
Huge Lachlan fan. Love his outlook
